Get a Grip!

List of different ways of holding different objects with one hand
  • Wrap fingers around the object - fingers meet each other.
  • Using two fingers (thumb & index finger) to pick items
  • Grabbing - whole palm
  • Use of 3 fingers (thumb, index, middle fingers)
  • 2 palms adjacent to each other (scooping)- touching
  • 2 palms adjacent to each other (balancing)-not touching
  • Using hand and arm (hugging)

Observation and Drawing of how I hold my pencil

Using only 3 fingers: thumb, index and middle fingers.
The remaining two fingers,  ring finger and pinky are drooped down to the side.
This hand position is used to hold pens or pencils.

Observation of how the gorilla moves about using their arms, legs, hands, and feet.

  • Sometimes they walk on fours, sometimes on twos.
  • 5 fingers and 5 toes with fingernails and toenails.
  • They curl up their hands when on fours.
  • Their big toe is far apart from the rest of the toes.

Questions on how primates move.

  • Why is their big toe further apart from the rest of the toes?
  • Why do they curl up their hands when on fours?
  • Why do they pump/hit the chest? --> difficult to find out (see reactions of other gorillas)
  • Why are they on fours at times and twos at other times? --> investigative
  • Why is there a large space between 1st toe and the rest?
  • Do they swing on trees? --> non-investigative
  • Why are their arms longer than their legs? --> investigative
  • Why is the skin so rough/horny?
